S Range Austrian Generals NS 5s and Command stands

These are the rebased Generals and command elements for my new old Austrian Army mentioned in the previous post.

Because I only wanted infantry in helmets I moved on the battalions in shakos, acquired an additional fusilier battalion in helmets, and kept the other helmeted battalions, the grenadiers and jagers. All are German battalions (with white trousers) instead of the Hungarians (in blue). Any further additions will be painted as Hungarians. The army is extremely well provided with cavalry though mainly lights - one regiment of cuirassiers, then chevaulegers, hussars and lancers aplenty. I have also acquired in the last week or so another NS 5s Austrian General which is in the process of being painted up.

What I don't have is any S Range Austrian artillery so if anyone has any for which they have no further use I would be grateful to hear from you.

Over the Christmas holiday I took the whole army off their old card bases and put them onto 2mm mdf, painted Vallejo Intermediate Green, as for these figures. I am waiting for a day or two of decent weather to plastidip spray the bases. I also have some rather nice Adolfo Ramos flags for these (for use with S Range get the 20mm ones rather than the 25mm as they are a bit too big).

When I have got the bases sprayed I will try to take some unit and army photos.

I am also working on standard bearers for my S Range French in Egypt, again using the Adolfo Ramos versions of the striking flags carried by the demi brigades in this conflict.

They never made Lasalle...

Thanks to Jeff for sending me this figure. The painter seems to have deceided the nearest figure to Lasalle was Murat (but see comment below). However, the FNCX codes are for the later (current)range, and have the horse furniture attached to the horse. The S Range personalities were coded NS - Murat was NS 9 - and no Lasalle is listed. When I have a chance I will post a comparison picture of this S Range Murat with the Minifigs 20mm/Alberken one.

Napoleonic Units: Brunswick Infantry

Two battalions of Brunswick infantry, using:

BrN 2s infantryman advancing;
BrN 4s infantry officer;
BrN 5s infantry standard bearer; and
BrN 6s infantry drummer.

The drummer of the battalion on the left is Hinchliffe.

Napoleonic Cavalry figure identification notes

I'm trying to identify various S Range Napoleonic cavalry figures. The problem is that the code numbers were embossed on metal tags which went between the figures' feet. Almost always these have been removed, and it is quite hard to tell one lancer or hussar from another. The S Range catalogues were not particularly well illustrated with photographs and sometimes the figure pictured is not always identified.

While I am still struggling with this, one thing which has helped slightly is referring the two pages posted here from the 1978 (later) Minifigs catalogue. In the later (current) range of course the horse furniture is cast on the horse, not the rider as with S Range. Therefore when ordering you need to know what the right horse is. This information from the catalogue can be helpful when trying to identify what troop type and nationality some of the S Range figures are.

BN 29s Royal Marine Officer

I have been reviewing my assorted Royal Marines, mainly Hinton Hunt, which have been posted on the Hinton Hunter. These odds and ends are (I think) two Minifigs 20mm Marines plus an S Range Marine Officer. I think the officer is a superb figure a fop under fire.

Pictures from Military Modelling, May and June 1971

Military Modelling ran a long series of articles on The Napoleonic Wargame by Charles Grant in the early 1970s. Earlier instalments were illustrated with pictures of the Minifigs HO (20mm) range; later ones included pictures of S Range figures, like the two posted here. The second picture includes some fondly remembered Bellona vacuum formed terrain pieces - walls, bridge and river sections.

Very early S Range Review, from Bayonet magazine 1969

Bayonet was the magazine of the Horse and Musket Society, first published in 1967. This early review of some of the first S Range figures, and an advert for Miniature Figurines publlished on the back cover, come from Vol 2 No. 5.

Bit of a mystery - General Hautpoul

This is a bit of a mysetry. By comparison with the later Minifigs range, this Cuirassier General is Hautpoul, but I have not found any S range listing including this figure. Comments welcome!
