Alan amongst other things was a great S Range man with an unerring eye for conversion possibilities and huge skill in carrying them out. He sent me some of his pieces, including a wonderful Franco Prussian War ambulance, which I will treasure.

His later Nineteenth Century armies were stunning and stand testament to the man.

If you would like to mark his passing I suggest you go over to the blog and look at some of his work.

I never met him personally, only by email and internet, but he was unfailingly friendly, courteous, and helpful. I can only start to imagine what his family and friends must be feeling.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8733658403659816265.post-78391911292481868382020-06-23T23:57:00.002+01:002020-06-23T23:57:38.656+01:00OF 10 Napoleonic Cantiniere

Not to be mistaken for OF 8, American Civil War Cantiniere (previous post here). In practice I think they are interchangeable and could also easily be used for Crimean War and Franco Prussian War.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8733658403659816265.post-21328572354287900352020-06-23T23:46:00.000+01:002020-06-27T19:13:37.924+01:00BN 28s, 29s Marine advancing, and officer

I hope to do some more tidying up in the coming weeks, to take photographs of some figures I have acquired since listing them on the blog, and to correct any misidentifications which may have crept in.

I'm also going to try using photographs of the "new" Minifigs from a 1978 catalogue to see if they can help with identifications of the S Range SYW figures which can be hard to identify - different grenadiers in mitres can be hard to tell apart.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8733658403659816265.post-57893670827259417092020-02-09T15:04:00.000+00:002020-02-09T15:37:49.638+00:00AFA 2s Catapult

These were listed without codes as Packs for Mules @ 5p each without Mule & Gun (this was to distinguish them from the Colonial Artillery set CFA 4s Pack Set of 3 Mules with Barrel, Wheels, Body and Ammo Packs). This included one each of Packs 1,2 and 3, along with 23 mules (I am currently unclear whether this was the same animal as NFAH 2s pack Horse - from the single model I have, compared to the catalogue photo of CFA 4s below it seems to be the same model but with two different descriptions).
The photo below appears in the catalogue but isn't ;listed as a set so I think this was put together from these other components..

There was one specific foot Rocket Batteryman figure listed, BN 34s carrying rocket.

To complete your Rocket Units, S range also offered:

NFA 7s Rocket Launcher
NFA 17s British Rocket Battery Caisson
NFA 18s Siege Rocket Launcher
SFA 8s British Rocket Battery Caisson Set of Caisson, Limber, 4 Horses and 2 Drivers
SFA 13s Rocket Battery Set of Launcher and Three Crew
SFA 14s Siege Rocket Launcher Set of Launcher and Three Crew

Clearly there were two further Rocket Batterymen on foot which were only available in the sets (as I have seen a figure firing the rocket which does not appear in the BN lists). I think the difference between siege and standard rocket launcher models may have been been the angle of firing, the regular being lower than the siege ones.

To my knowledge very little has been written about what has come to be called (or at least I think of) the Miniature Figurines "intermediates" range, These filled a gap between S Range and the later (and still current) fat a*sed chunky dwarves.

I haven't found any mention of them in any catalogue, in any review, and have no recollection of them ever being issued or seeing them with a chance to buy them.My local wargames shop (imagine such a thing) went straight from a display of S Range figures to the new (current) range with nothing in between - this would have been around 1973 or 1974.

Having said that you do see a fair number of them on the second hand market so they must have been in at least restricted circulation for at least a short while. The Intermediates are much closer to the S range figures (with which they work quite well to bulk out original S Range figures) than the later (and current) ones.

They seem to have been Napoleonic foot figures only - I haven't seen any examples from other ranges. They are very slightly larger proportions that the S Range figures but haven't gone what I will call full chunky dwarf. They can be recognised by this but most clearly that the codes are embossed in the top of the base, like the current figures, and not scratched on the bottom of the base. It also gets confusing when you find some examples of S Range figures with codes on the underside of the base where the S has been omitted from the end of the code, and even one or two which seem to have been given completely the wrong code.

Goya has kindly sent me some photos of S Range figures and their intermediary counterparts, but I need to have a further think about how to present these, and to take some photos from my own collection which will take some time and a lot of rummaging about in the loft ,and then a fair bit of photographing and posting. So this will happen it just may take some time. Ideally I would make a number of posts with three photos for comparison - S Range, Intermediate, and Current - for each figure, but I am unlikely to have current ones and these are mainly available in the Miniature Figurines on line catalogue with Caliver Books..

So this post is half a pace holder and half a statement of intent. If anyone has any more information on Intermediates in the meanwhile I would be glad to hear from you via comments.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8733658403659816265.post-21695158027060144142019-12-12T19:49:00.001+00:002019-12-20T17:22:43.565+00:00Mystery trotting horse long code

Fairly clearly a trotting horse in the S range style, with an earlier (I think) octagonal base shape - basically a rectangle with the four corners snipped off.
There is no legible code on the bottom of the base but I do wonder if this is a home recast, given the overall roughness of the base.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8733658403659816265.post-68088710927491192912019-12-12T19:39:00.002+00:002019-12-12T21:02:03.961+00:00Mystery horses marked MF

This is one of my favourite S Range horses but is a bit of a mystery for two reasons.

The only code or marking it carries is a small MF on the top of the base. I have seen other horses with similar markings.

Then also I can't really pin it down to any horse in any of the listings I have.

I wonder if this might be one of the very earliest S Range separate horses, given that the MF code may have been used for the Miniature Figurines 20mm range (Alberken plus later additions) which was the range before the introduction of S Range.

I will try to review the thinking of what came in when with the S Range horses and write it up here later - the story seems to get more complicated all the time.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8733658403659816265.post-22161868437980922642019-12-09T23:47:00.002+00:002019-12-20T17:17:55.650+00:00CFA 4s Pack set of 3 mules with barrel, wheels, body and ammo packs

I've taken a first run at these with those horses I have easily to hand.

It has thrown up some mysteries and some undocumented items.

Mystery code #1 - DH1

Apart from being the postcode for the posh part of Durham, I haven't come across this code before (impressed on the top of the base).

It is in use with a SYW Horse Grenadier and clearly has a docked tail. Whether this was done by the original owner or is a feature of the horse model is not clear. It definitely is a Miniature Figurines and S Range horse.

i have taken these photos on my phone as the battery in my camera is playing up but based on the results I think the camera in the phone may be just as good.
